Tangle With Mt. Manga

By Tyler Nichols

In a faraway place there was a snow-white barn owl named Snowy. Snowy was not an ordinary owl, he could control wind currents. He discovered this power when he was first learning to fly… He had jumped off a tree branch and was flapping as hard as her could when he accidentally created a small tornado that nearly knocked down the tree!

167 feet from Snowy’s nest was a village. 872 feet from the village was Mt. Manga. Mt. Manga is a volcano that hasn’t erupted in 200 years so the villagers felt safe.

But on the night of October 26, 2022 Snowy was out hunting mice when he hered a defining KA-BOOM!!!! Coming from Mt. Manga. Snowy couldn’t believe his eyes Mt. Manga had erupted! He nearly relinquished his grip on the mouse he had caught. Snowy was also amazed that the villagers hadn’t awoke.  “Raaackk” Snowy yelled at the top of his lungs. Most of the villagers woke up and upon seeing the rapidly approaching lava they awoke the other villagers.

Snowy beat his wings as hard as he could and created a tornado. Snowy directed the tornado towards the quickly coming lava flow. The events were catastrophe. The tornado sucked up the lava and flung it every direction, including the village. The villagers were very mad at Snowy for nearly burning there village down. He flew out of their reach but they threw stones at him. Infact he had to climb to a height of 214 – only 4,782 feet below the cloud level – into the air. “Why didn’t I think of this before?”  Snowy said to himself. Looking down he estimated that the lava was only 300 feet from the village and was closing in fast. Swooping down he beat his wings as hard as he could. Harder, harder, harder he thought to himself. He was beating he wings harder than he had ever dreamed of, a rate of 42 beats per second! Upon opening his eyes he saw that the lava had literally stopped. Closing his again he thought harder, harder, harder! In his mind he could here the villagers below. Snowy! Snowy! Snowy! He opened his eyes again. It looked like someone had hit the rewind button on Mt. Manga’s eruption except without the ka-boom. From that night forward all of the villagers respected Snowy. They even helped him find a new home, since his first on had been burned down.
