Max the Mole

By Tyler Nichols

Ding-dong, explorer Dan Abreeses doorbell rang.

“Come in.” he said. It was his friend Jeff. Jeff was not only Dan’s friend but a fellow explorer.

          “Guess what!” Jeff said.

          “What?” Dan asked.

“ The government found this uncharted island in the Pacific Ocean, and we get to explore it!” Jeff told Dan the great news. There was nothing that the two liked more than a place to explore. “It will just be us and a girl named Mary.”

“So when do we go?” Dan asked.

          “Next week.” Jeff responded

One week later Mary, Dan, and Jeff were in a helicopter to this uncharted is land. When they finally found a spot to land. They packed up there gear and headed out. In the distance there was a huge mountain.

“Lets go do some exploring on that mountain and see what we can see.” Mary said. The boys agreed. So they set out for the mountain. About half way up the mountain Jeff said the good old question of: “Are we there yet? We must have been walking for at least two hours now!”

“Actually we have been walking for approximately one hour and 25 minutes. One hour 27 minutes and 36, 37, 38, seconds to be exact.” Dan said looking at his watch.

          “I’m cold.” Jeff said.

“Oh come on, it’s 42 degrees!” Mary said looking at her thermometer.

“I wish there was a cave or something to make camp in.” Jeff said.

“You mean like that one over there?” Dan said pointing to a cave in the mountain.

“Yea like that one.” Jeff said with a smile on his face. So the explorers hiked the five or six feet to the cave.

“I think it is warmer in here.” Jeff said.

          “Me to.” Dan added.

“You are both right it is 60 in here!” Mary confirmed by looking at her thermometer.

“Then what are we doing? Lets make camp!” Jeff exclaimed, and that is exactly what they did. First they put up the tent, then the portable stove, then their sleeping bags.

“I wonder if this island is un-inhabited?” Mary wondered out loud.

“I have to disagree with you, I found a bat.” Dan said “And here is another one, and another, I think there is a whole colony of bats in this cave!”

“And to go with bats I found a rat!” Jeff said.

“Bats and rats! I don’t want to sleep in here!” Mary said.

“Oh don’t worry, they are asleep.” Dan said.

“Well I shure do hope that nothing is awake in this cave.” Mary said with a terrified look.

“And I wish I new exactly were we are.” Dan wondered.

“We are at 135 degrees west and 10 degrees north.”
Mary said.

“No, no, no what this island is called.” Dan said.

“There is something awake in this cave and this island is called Fire Island.” A mysterious voice said.

“Who said that? Because I didn’t!” Mary, Jeff, and Dan said simotaniously.

“I said that” said a mole stepping out of the shadows. “I can also breathe fire as well as talk.”

“If you can talk why don’t you tell us you name if you have one?” Dan asked the mole.

“My name is Max.” Max said.

“Also could you prove your power of fire?” Jeff asked “We could really use one.”

“Ok.” Max said. He took in a deep breath and blew out a stream of fire. The explorers fire was ablaze in seconds.

“Gee thanks.” Jeff said. All of a sudden there was a rumbling sound “Cave in!” Max yelled. They all ran and ducked for cover in the back of the cave. The rocks in the font of the cave began to fall to the floor creating a solid rock barrier, trapping the explorers and max.

“Hold on and I will try and melt the rock, you guys and girl better pile up some rocks in front of you because this is going to get pretty hot.”

“OK.” they all agreed. When the explorers had made a barrier large enough to hide behind, Max stood ontop and blew out with all his might. The rocks started to glow red and heat up. Soon the rocks at the bottom started to melt under the presher of the fire and rocks above and the fire. After about five minutes of blowing the rock pile was small enough to climb over.

“I melted enough of the rocks to climb over, but we are going to have to wait till morning for the rocks to cool down.” Max said.

The next morning Max agreed to come with them to be studied by scientists under one condition: that they would return him to his home when the were done. Mary, Jeff, and Dan agreed to this so they all set out down the mountain to the helicopter.

“Wasn’t the chopper here?” Dan said.

“Why do I get the feeling your right?” Jeff said.

“Um guys I got bad news, I think I found a helicopter rotor.” Max said peering through the bushes.

          “That’s pretty bad.” Dan said.

“Then how will we get home?!” Mary said with that scared look on her face.

“You could make a hot-air balloon.” Max suggested.

“A hot-air balloon! We couldn’t even power it!” Jeff said.

“Have you forgot about me?” Max asked Jeff.

          “Oh yeah.” He responded.

“Gather some large leaves to make the balloon and use grass to sew them together. You will also need some sticks and some tall grass to make the basket.” Max explained “You can find sticks under trees and the long grass in the marsh just east of were you here. The large leafs should also be in the marsh.”

“Umm OK.” Jeff said. “I will go find the stuff in the marsh, the large leafs and the long grass.” Soon they had all of the ingredients to make the balloon. Mary was the only one that could sew so she was stuck dong that. After about one hour
Mary was done. They all the climbed into the basket and Max set them off. They all enjoyed the ride home, especially Max since he had never seen anywhere but his island.
